Roger Bacon, also known as Doctor Mirabilis ("astounding teacher"), one of the earliest advocates of the modern scientific method in the West. He was intimately acquainted with the philosophical and scientific insights of the Arab world, one of the most advanced civilizations at the time. Can be placed on the boundary between magic and science. He is believed to have introduced gunpowder (a Chinese invention) to the West. He also makes some bold futurist statements, predicting powered ships, automobiles, flying machines, and scuba gear. He was a believer in aquaring knowledge about the world. He planned to publish first comprehensive encyclopedia, but only fragments ever appeared.
